A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:
* Relaxation of the skin of the face causing sagging
* Deepening of the fold lines between the nose and corner of the mouth
* Fat that has fallen or has disappeared
* Jowls
* Loose skin and excess fat of the neck that can appear as a double chin or “turkey neck”
A facelift reduces wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck caused by aging or weight loss. The procedure removes excess skin, tightens the underlying muscles, and reshapes the skin in a higher position. The results go beyond what can be expected from wrinkle-fighting injections like Botox, different types of lifts such as cheek lifts or mini lifts addressing specific concerns. The loss of youthful contours in the face can be due to variety of factors, including thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, as well as heredity and stress. Other procedures that might be performed in conjunction with a facelift are brow lift and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes.
How is Facelift Surgery Performed?
A traditional facelift procedure is performed through an incision starting in the hair or hairline above and in front of the ear (the temporal region). The incision is extended downward in front of the ear, comes under the ear and then upward behind the ear ending in the hair or hairline behind the ear. The skin and fatty tissues are then lifted off the underlying muscle and fascia (connective tissue) as far forward as is necessary to correct the loose skin problem. The underlying muscle and fascia can be tightened with sutures if the surgeon feels it is necessary. The skin is pulled back and upward and the excess skin removed. The wound is then closed with sutures and skin staples. Some surgeons leave a drain in the wounds to remove excess blood. Bandages are then applied. There are surgical techniques which go into deeper tissues rather than under the skin and fat. The results are similar.
The neck area is one of the most rapidly affected facial areas with aging. As a result of sagging and increased fatness, the part we call the jowl forms and no matter how young the face looks, the jowl causes us to look older than our age. If neck aesthetics is to be performed together with a facelift, this procedure can be performed without opening another incision other than the facelift incision. If only neck aesthetics is considered and sagging is not excessive in the neck area, definite results can be obtained even with liposuction or laser liposuction. If the muscles in the neck are relaxed and there is an increase in adipose tissue along with it, with a 3 cm incision opened just below the chin, both the fat tissue is removed, and the loosened neck muscles are stretched towards the middle line, giving the neck is given a new, desirable shape.
